The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index posted one of its longest losing streaks in about two decades. Weekend tokenized Micron, SanDisk and SK Hynix swings, plus the Oct 19 Black Monday anniversary, put focus on Monday’s open.
Into the week around Oct 16, semis saw one of the longest losing streaks since roughly 2008: coverage put the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) and related ETFs such as SOXX in a ~7–9 session slide with double-digit percent losses and a heavy weekly drop. NVIDIA (NVDA) and other AI leaders corrected sharply over about a week to eight sessions, reopening the “buy the dip vs deeper reset” debate.
Drivers were mixed: worries about slower AI capex growth, higher funding costs, and wider neocloud credit spreads (e.g. CoreWeave / CRWV) sat beside supply narratives—Dell and others still framed memory tightness in multi-year terms, while Micron (MU) and SK Hynix debated price vs fundamentals. Broker cuts to AMD’s long-term AI GPU shipment outlook reinforced a “orders concentrating at NVIDIA” repricing theme.
Over the Oct 17–18 weekend, tokenized chip names on some crypto venues swung sharply in thin liquidity, and social feeds revived “Black Monday” anniversary talk (1987-10-19). Weekend prints are noisy and are not the cash open; they are still a sentiment datapoint. Strong Asia supply-chain and TSMC-style guides were also being repriced as global risk appetite cooled.
Reading notes
- Separate cash losing streaks from weekend tokenized quotes—the latter is thinner and noisier.
- Compare SOXX / NVDA / MU with CRWV credit spreads: semi beta ≠ single-name AI infra credit risk.
- The Oct 19 / 1987 calendar rhyme is narrative, not a forecast of a repeat crash.
